Presentation of Zmijavci

Zmijavci is located some 8 km south of the Imotski, some 50 km inlands from the coast, and about 100 km south-east of Split. It has about 2,100 inhabitants in the single settlement of the same name.
Historically, the name of the place was changed in 1948 to Zmijavci Podbabski, until 1921 being considered a "suburb" of the village of Runović, in the period often counted as single village of Zmijevci Runovicki, since 1993 forming the single municipality of Zmijava-Runović or Zmijavci-Runović. That municipality split in 1997 into Zmijavci and Runovići.

Flag of Zmijavci

The symbols of Zmijavci were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka, and approved by the Central State Office for Administration before 2006.

The flag is in proportions 1:2, light blue with the coat of arms, bordered yellow, in the middle.

Coat of arms of Zmijavci

The coat of arms is "Azure a dove argent and in chief sinister a Latin cross of the same".
According to the municipal website, the coat of arms is the copy of a "1500-year old" relief. That would set it in the 6th century, a bit too early for heraldry, but it does not mean that the dove and the cross are not carved in some older stone monument.
