on a chevron between in chief two lion’ heads erased Argent, in base a sword
Argent with pommel and hilt Or and enfiled with a wreath of laurel proper, three
ravens Sable.
The college was founded in 1952. St. Anne’s was originally
called the Society for Home Students. Its 4th Principal Eleanor Plumer, obtained
a large gift from Amy Hartland, and in 1942 renamed it the Society of St. Anne
(the Virgin Mary’s mother by Christian and Islamic tradition). Hartland left her
entire large estate to the College in 1945. Its coat of arms is that of the
Principal’s father, Field Marshal Herbert Viscount Plumer, credited with a major
victory at Ypres and one of the few military leaders, whose reputation after WW1
was enhanced.

A flag flown at the boathouse, likely
at the Summer Eights, a four-day regatta of bumps races which constitutes the
University's main intercollegiate rowing event of the year, displays the shield
as a banner of arms, but lacks the sword and wreath.
