Overview

Some photos of Ecuador presidential sash are at Wikimedia and nimg.sulekha.com.
The text on sash is: MI PODER EN LA CONSTITUCIÓN.
Aleksandar Nemet, 24 January 2010

The sash was established by Decree of September 25, 1830 in its original depiction of a sky blue horizontal sash with the motto "MI PODER EN LA CONSTITUCIÓN" (MY POWER ON THE CONSTITUTION). Initially it was a plain sky blue band, inspired by the Spaniard decorations, with the inscription but slight variations of it have featured laurel wreaths and even stars representing existing provinces.

It is considered the country's highest decoration and has been traditionally manufactured by the "Madres/Hermanas Contemplativas del Buen Pastor" (Contemplative Mothers/Sisters of the Good Shepherd) also known formally as "Hermanas del Buen Pastor Contemplativas" (Contemplative Sisters of the Good Shepherd), a religious local community since at least 1869, although the congregation was established afterwards in 1871 (https://www.infobae.com) and it is traditional that the establishment of the congregation in the country was in turn gratified with the making of a sash for the then President Gabriel García Moreno who ruled the country during several terms (1861-1865, 1869 and 1869-1875). However there are at least two cases in the XXth century where the sash was manufactured by a Colombian tailor (https://www.semana.com). The sash measures 1 m long by 15 cm wide.

The sashes

There are at least three types of sashes: one featuring a blue stripe and one featuring the country's tricolor. The font type has varied over the years (there are examples where Gothic font type has been used in several design types (both the earliest blue and the latest tricolor). Some illustrations however show the earliest type, that is the sky blue pattern, as having also additional white stripes on the borders, which leads to some confusion. Even after the modern standardization of the design in 1979 in what can be referred to as the second type (tricolor with arms and motto), slight details vary from time to time. It has also included religious adornments (relics).
