Frauenstein Coat of Arms

Shield Or, issuant from base an irregular rock Argent, sitting on rock a female saint, nimbed Or and dressed Gules with a cape Azure, holding a bunch of three fleur-de-lis Argent stemmed Vert by her dexter hand.
Meaning:
A fortress of the Margraves of Meißen at the Bohemian border was finished in the 12th century. The existence of a village with parish church is proven since 1218. The village was mentioned as a city in 1384 and became the capital of an extended lordship. 1399 mayor and local council existed. In 1411 the city rights were confirmed by a charter. After the city was detroyed in 1426 by the Hussites, it was replaced by another settlement in front of the castle and it was walled. A bit of silver mining was practised from the 14th until the 19th century. Later timber processing became the main business line. The current arms are based on local seals. The existence of a city seal from 1507 is proven but the seal itself got lost. An archtectural sculpture from 1694 still exists. The arms are somehow canting, referring to the name. The lady (German: Frau) on the arms is St. Mary, as patron of the local castle mentioned in 1292. She is recognisable by her attribute, a fleur-de-lis. In 1998 the Spanish shield was put onto a brown Baroque cartouche.
