The city was established 1 July 1969, when the municipalities of Barnhausen, Berghausen, Borgholzhausen (proper), Casum, Cleve, Hamlingdorf, Holtfeld, Kleekamp, Oldendorf, Ostbarthausen, Westbarthausen und Wichlinghausen merged.

It is a horizontal red over white over red flag with centred arms. The ratio between the stripes is 1:2:1.

Over three red chevrons in a silver (=white) field is a red wall topped by four pinnacles filling the whole field.
Meaning:
The chevrons are the coat of arms of the Counts of Ravensberg. The wall is a symbol of the rank of a city.

Meaning:
Like above the chevrons are the coat of arms of the Counts of Ravensberg. The wall is a symbol of a city.

Flag and arms were approved by district governor (Regierungspräsident) Detmold on 14 January 1970. The coat of arms the same like that one of the former Borgholzhausen Subcounty (German: Amt), approved on 17 March 1938 by Oberpräsident of Prussian Westphalia Province. The former arms were approved by Prussian Ministry of State 28 August 1929. The former flag was never approved officially.
