About the municipality

This municipality takes up roughly a third of the island of Fogo, incl. most of its volcanic crater and shares the peak summit with its northern neighbour Mosteiros mun. Comparing previously reported maps with current ones it would seem that a sizable chunk of territory was added somewhen in the late 2010s, including the municipal seat, town Cova Figueira.

There is no colonial-era equivalent of this flag as this municipality was created in 2005, already well in Cabo Verde’s Second Republic — by dettaching one of the communes of mun. São Filipe.

About the flag

The flag of the Municipality of Santa Catarina do Fogo is diagonally divided in eight triangles (gyronny pattern) with municipal emblem in the center of it (sources: photo showing flag in official indoors use and official Facebook page masthead).
Valentin Poposki, 02 Jun 2024

The official Facebook page masthead interestingly shows both the national and municipal flags side-by-side in a diagramatic orthographic view, evidencing the slightly more oblong ratio of the former and its slightly darker shade of blue (which could be due to mere choice of flag clipart, but it’s still interesting); it also shows the seal (albeit as watermark) and a detail view of the municipal emblem.
António Martins, 28 Dec 2025

The design of the flag is Portuguese-style gyronny of eight, in yellow over blue. This is one of the three municipal flags in Cabo Verde with this background pattern — the others being São Vicente and Maio, both blue over white.

The emblem is quasi-heraldic and can be blazoned as Celeste on a mound Cendrée issuant from the flanks and from a base wavy Azure fimbriated Celeste a goat statant Brunâtre horned Argent and in chief a grape bunch Purple leaved Vert. On the flag, it is thinly edged in black (outside) and white (inside). The emblem is completed by a chain of 4 green links at its apex, flanked by the usual pair of 5-star arcs, and a scroll at its bottom. The stars are edged black and of the same shade of yellow as the background gyrons, and the scroll is white with a heavy black shadow and forked ribbon tips, and reads in very small black serifed capitals "Município de Santa Catarina do Fogo".

The two shades of blue are apparent even when the emblem is depicted (as in this edict) in muted colors.
