The municipality of Lins (71,432 inhabitants in 2010; 57,144 ha) is located in center western São Paulo State, 430 km of São Paulo. Lins is named for Major Manoel Joaquim de Albuquerque Lins (1852-1926), 8th President of the São Paulo Province (1908-1912). The Albuquerque Lins railway station was inaugurated on 16 February 1908 at Km 152 of the Brazil Northwestern Railway. A few huts were built close to the station in 1911, but the establishment of the new settlement started on 1913 on pieces of land offered by Joaquim de Toledo Piza. The district of Albuquerque Lins was established, as part of the municipality of Bauru, on 30 December 1913 by State Law No. 1,408. The next year, the district was transferred from Bauru to Pirajuí. The municipality of Lins was established on 21 April 1920.

The flag of Lins is prescribed by Municipal Law of 13 April 1970. The flag was designed by the Coats of Arms Commission, based in Campinas, upon request of the Municipal Council. The flag is square, of 1.30 m in side, divided in eight triangles in turn red and blue. In the middle of the flag is placed the municipal coat of arms, covering 1/3 of the flag. The flag's field shall be made of cotton, while the coat of arms shall be made of felt. The flag's staff shall be coloured red and blue, with a spear-like finial argent.

The coat of arms of Lins is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 281 of 17 December 1953, amended by Municipal Law No. 1,128 of 2 January 1970. The coat of arms is "Quarterly, 1. Gules an arm argent holding a four- pointed flag of the same charged with the Cross of the Order of Christ, 2. Azure a cross bottony ensigned with three mullets in base a lily all or, 3. Checky azure and argent a fleur-de-lis vert, 4. Gules a book a pencil and a torch all or. The shield surmounted by a mural crown argent. The shield supported dexter by a branch of coffee sinister by a plant of cotton the two leaved and fructed proper. Below the shield a scroll azure inscribed with the motto "EX . COFFEA . AC . SCHOLA . LINS" (Latin, From coffee and school [emerged] Lins] in letters argent."

The first quarter represents the early colonizers and the pioneers. Red is a symbol of the famous war acts of the Portuguese people and of the resulting discoveries. The right arm represents the triumphs. The flag represent the pioneers, the four points standing for the four cardinal directions in which the country was built. The Cross of the Order of Christ recall the Portuguese sailors who discovered Brazil. Argent is a symbol of loyalty, respectability and nobleness, shared by the Portuguese people, the São Paulo people, the Empire, the Republic, and the pioneers. The second quarter represents the Christian faith of the Portuguese people. The lily is the floral attribute of St. Anthony, the patron saint of Lins. The third quarter is a tribute to Joaquim de Toledo Piza e Almeida, the descendant of a noble Spanish family, who offered in 1913 to the municipality of Bauru a piece of land to establish what would be the town of Lins. The fourth quarter symbolizes the cultural and physical progress and development.
