The municipality of Rio do Sul (71,061 inhabitants in 2019; 26,097 ha) is located 200 km west of Florianópolis.
Ivan Sache, 5 November 2021
The flag and arms of Rio do Sul are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 5,675
promulgated on 3 December 2015. This is a consolidated Law that abrogates all
the previous Laws on the municipal symbols.
Article 2.
The coat of
arms of the municipality of Rio do Sul shall have the following characteristics
and description.
I - The arms of Rio do Sul consists in a rounded-off
Portuguese shield surmounted by a mural crown or, the proper symbol of towns.
The gate is inscribed with the date of foundation of the town, 10 October 1930.

III - The
proper shield, which constitutes the "representative arms" is inscribed on top,
in white letters on a black background, the name of the town of Rio do Sul.
IV - In the shield's right part is featured a landscape of river Itajaí do Sul,
coming from the Chapadas do Fraxinal and the Serra Geral, tilling a vast,
prosperous agricultural area, and joining river Itajaí do Oeste near the bridge
represented on the landscape, to form the mighty river Itajaí Açu. On the
river's left and right banks, which were connected in the early times of
colonization by a ferry, today substituted by a majestic concrete bridge, stands
the town of Rio do Sul, an active center of agricultural trade and industry
fostering the increase of the Brazilian homeland. In the homeland's blue sky,
with the course of river Itajaí do Sul, the Southern Cross constellation, a
shining and inspiring symbol for Brazilian people.
V - On the left side, in
the upper quarter, on a green background, a symbol of abundance of the Brazilian
forests and mountains, a plow representing the initiation of the colonization of
the municipality by a farmer, whose arduous labor in the cultivation of wild
nature undoubtedly elicited the progress of the municipality.
VI - In the
central quarter, on the left side, on a background or, the profile of Hermes'
head, representing commerce, a link to progress and prosperity and a decisive
step in the formation of the town.
VII - At the bridge's angle, on the left,
on a light blue background an iron cogwheel as a tribute to the industrial
pioneer, who, with persistence and huge sacrifice, sympathized with colonists
and transformed their products into a commodity coveted all over the country.

The flag of Rio do Sul was instituted on 15 October 1960. It was designed
on commission by the artist H. Steiner of Rio de Janeiro. The proportions
are the same as for the national flag, 14:20. The flag is divided into
three horizontal stripes, green, blue, and yellow, colors taken from the
national flag. On the center, inside an outlined white lozenge (presumably
also based on the national flag), are the five yellow stars of the
constellation of the Southern Cross (Cruzeiro do Sul).
