The Hyde Park Ice Yacht Club, as the name implies, was an organization devoted to ice boating, particularly racing. Members included none other than
Franklin Delano Roosevelt [1882-1945] (before his presidential days), Frederick William Vanderbilt [1856-1938; director of the New York Central Railroad for 61 years and of another 21 railroads], Colonel Archibold Rogers [1851-1928], Thomas Newbold, and others of Hyde Park and Staatsburg elite at the turn of the 20th century. The membership, however, was diverse and included doctors, lawyers, farmers, fishermen and other local businessmen such as a butcher and a grocer. Members were united by a shared passion for their river and their sport. In all, the membership roster for the year 1909 listed 78 active members.
A color plate found in the 1909 hard-bound club yearbook shows:
- the club burgee, white with a blue bend over a red bend sinister;
- the Commodore's flag, blue with a white bend over a red bend sinister;
- the Vice-Commodore flag, red with a white bend over a blue bend sinister.
