Description of the flag

This flag is the official flag of the City of Butler, Pennsylvania, although you will not find the city flag flying at the city building or displayed in any way today, City Council once ordered a flag. Here is a photo of the flag that appeared in the local newspaper, the Butler Eagle, on Saturday, October 22, 1960.

CITY COLORS MARK VICTORY
The first official City of Butler flag, shown by Mayor Harry F. Pepper and Don Bishop Gibson, flew for the first time last night at the 12-0 Butler victory over Aliquippa on the Beaver County community's gridiron. The flag, which will be used at all future official city functions, is light yellow background, orange fringe, with the city seal in blue.

Butler Gets Official Flag
Butler, PA. Oct. 21 - Not to be outdone by other cities of the state, whatever the size, Butler unfurled an official flag last night at the football game between Butler High School and Aliquippa High School at the latter's field. The flag, ordered recently by the Butler Council, was accepted at a preliminary ceremony by Mayor Harry F. Pepper. Its colors, white and yellow, with a darker yellow on the fringe and lettering in blue carries the city's official seal in the center and this legend: "City of Butler, Chartered March 19, 1917"
The flag was carried with the Butler High School band and is paraded between halves at the football games.

The seal used on the flag differs from the seal available from the county: https://www.visitbutlercounty.com/sites/default/files/styles/thumbnail/public/media/logos/members/City-of-Butler-Logo.png
The text around the seal is very different. Horizontal lines don't appear to be behind the keystone.

Butler Area Senior High School

[Butler Area Senior High School] image located by Erik Bell, 10 May 2023The flag carried by the Butler Senior High School (of Butler, Pennsylvania) marching band (known as the Butler Golden Tornado Marching Band) from the 1940s to the 1960s.

The photo appeared on the cover of the October 1943 issue of "The Magnet", Butler High's official magazine. On the title page is the following paragraph about the flag: "The October cover shows Butler High School's coat of arms. It is on the banner purchased last spring with funds raised by a gym dance and the sale of booster pennants. It is carried at football games, pep rallies, parades and displayed on the stage at concerts. Holding the banner in the picture are Jacqueline Drane and Jack McCollough."
