Description of the flag

The current county flag depicts the county logo on a white field. An image of it can be seen at (leapathsu.com [https://web.archive.org/web/20250201192235/https://leapatshsu.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/sf_60_capitol_rotunda_dome_web.jpg?w=840]). It appears to be a non-standard flag, closer to a square than rectangular. It was adopted sometime in the last decade, most certainly for the adoption of the new county logo. The logo itself depicts a yellow Zia sun symbol, with an image of Ship Rock overcast by the sun setting and having a stream pass by it (likely intended to be the San Juan River). Above and below the circle of the sun symbol while outside are triangles in orange and yellow; there is a lighter orange one that also cuts through the center of the circle. These triangles likely represent hills in the desert landscape. Above are the words "SAN JUAN" in blue, while below are the words "COUNTY", then "NEW MEXICO", and "SINCE 1887".

Second flag

The San Juan County flag was adopted for the hoisting of the county flags in the state capitol rotunda in January 1993. It depicts an older version of the county seal. Shaped like a horseshoe, it bears the full county name and the state name within the outer ring. Within is a snake-stripe pattern. In the innermost circle is a depiction of the sun in red, Ship Rock, the desert landscape, and the foundation year of 1887.

First flag

According to the Farmington Daily Times of 9 March 1987, the first San Juan county flag was adopted by county commissioners in 1972, and designed by county manager Roedell Schmitt. It had a white outline of the county and lettering on a blue background. Apparently this was the first county flag in the state.
