It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field quartered of blue and white.

The unofficial flag was pigeon blue with centred arms. This flag with the undefaced bendy arms has an unusual light blue shade, contrasting with the blue scroll on it.

The difference between the two coats of arms is simple — the official one has over all a commital coronet, while the unofficial version was the same as the original county arms (as in the dinastic arms of a lineage of landed gentry styled Count of Castanheira), see

Castanheira do Ribatejo was one of the nine communes of Vila Franca de Xira Municipality affected by the 2013 changes. It had 8266 inhabitants in 2011 and covered 15,9& km².

Shield Argent, a pale wavy Azure charged with a pallet wavy Argent between a grapevine Or leaved Vert at dexter and a branch of cherry Vert fruited Gules. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials: "CACHOEIRAS".
Meaning:
The pale wavy is a canting element ("cachoeiras" means "cataract"). Vine and cherries are symbolizing agriculture as economical base of the commune.
