About the Flag

It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain blue field.

Shield Argent with base wavy of Argent and Azure; issuant from base a mount Sable; in centre a mitre Gules, gemmed Or; in chief a goshawk volant proper (= maron) lined Sable, holding an inescutcheon Azure, charged with five plates in quincunx, in his claws. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black capitals "SÃO BRÁS - RIBEIRA GRANDE".
Meaning:
Goshawk, and quina, are local symbols of the Azores. The mitre probably is referring to St. Blaise, the local patron saint and name giver of the commune.
