Symbols of Júzcar

The municipality of Júzcar in the Province of Malaga, Andalucia, has its own symbols. The coat of arms is from an unknown date, and the flag was selected through public contest on 23.07.2009.

Coat of arms:
Description: Quarterly shield. First and fourth, gules, a silver castle, masoned and opened sable. Second, azure, a silver fountain . Third, or, a tree proper, on a vert mount. A vert border with four silver millstones. The crest is a closed royal crown.
Meaning: The castles represent medieval fortifications, of which ruins still exist in three locations (Cerro Alcudia, Castillo del Romeral, and Castillejo), some of which show very deteriorated remains of walls. The fountain represents the abundance of water in the Júzcar area; more than twenty springs are located there, and four are within the town itself. The trees represent the fact that over 80% of the municipality is wooded, and historically, Júzcar was one of the largest silk producers, with an abundance of mulberry trees. The millstones symbolize the presence of up to twenty millstones, as oral traditions tell us.

Description: Divided into three horizontal stripes: the top one blue, the middle one ochre and slightly wider than the other two, and the bottom one green, separated by narrow gray stripes . In the center of the ochre stripe is the municipal coat of arms.
