Barcarrota (3,371 inhabitants in 2018; 13,610 ha) is a Spanish municipality in the province of Badajoz, Extremadura.

"The Symbols of the Town of Barcarrota" is a booklet of just 10 pages, published by the Barcarrota Town Council in June 2016 with the support of the Badajoz Provincial Council (Diputación de Badajoz). It was introduced by Alfonso Carlos Macías Gata, mayor of Barcarrota from 2015 to 2019.

In this presentation he says that Barcarrota has an official anthem. Regarding the coat of arms, and specially the flag, various administrative problems have led to considerable confusion. The Town Council, in a plenary session on October 1, 2015, decided to rectify these errors that had accumulated over the years, definitively and legally establishing the symbols that should represent a town with such a rich history as Barcarrota.

In the plenary session of October 1, 2015, the process of modifying the heraldic shield and adopting the flag that officially rep'resents the inhabitants of Barcarrota and its institutions was iniciated. The shield is blazoned as follows: "A checkered shield of 15 pieces, eight gold and seven azure. A bordure compony of eight pieces, representing Castile and Leon. The crest is the Royal Crown of Spain."

The coat of arms of Bancarrota was definitively approved by the City Council in a session held on March 28, 2016.

The coat of arms reported on the Wikipedia page has been deemed incorrect by the City Council, wich presents its official coat of arms on its website. The "previous" coat of arms was approved on April 2, 1986, and published in the Official Gazette of Extremadura, number 33, dated April 22, 1986, with the following description: "A checkered shield of gold and azure. The crest is a closed Royal Crown." [Neither the number of pieces nor the bordure are indicated].

Flag of Barcarrota

At a municipal council meeting on November 30, 1983, the proposal and design for the official flag of Barcarrota were included: "The town's banner would be green in conmemoration of the Knights of Alcántara, settlers of Barcarrota, with a height one-third greater than its width and a gold fringe. If the banner were to have a staff or finial, it would be a scallop shell or cross of the Military Order of Alcántara." This proposal did not achieve legal effect, because although it was unanimously approved like the coat of arms, it was never submitted to the then mandatory approval of the corresponding Junta de Extremadura, at the request of the City Council.

Therefore, and as proposed in the study now completed, the flag that will officially represent Barcarrota will have the following description:
"Rectangular flag, with proportions 2:3. Checkered field, with fifteen pieces, eight yellow and seven blue, in three horizontal stripes of five. Bordered with fourteen pieces, each 1/5 the width of the flag, seven red with a yellow castle with blue spaces, and seven white with a purple lion crowned yellow."
The flag of Barcarrota was definitively approved by the City Council in a session held on March 28, 2016.
