The current municipality (Kommune) was established in 2007 by merger of the municipalities of Kalundborg, Gørlev, Hvidebæk, Høng and Bjergsted. Besides the old city of Kalundborg nowadays 18 other settlements belong to the commune.
City and Castle of Kalundborg were founded by Esbern Snare, a brother of the Archbishop Absalon of Lund around 1167. He grew up together with the later King Waldemar the Great.
The building of the Church of Our Lady had begun already in 1160. The church had been planned to be the burial place of the Snare kin.
King Erik 6 Menved (1286 - 1319) fortified the walls of the city. Queen Margrethe 1 (died 1412) moved the Crown Jewels and the state archive from Vordingborg to the East Tower of the fortress of the city.
In 1494 an assembly of the Danish nobility took place in the city, presided by King Hans, which codified the indivisibility of the Kingdom of Denmark. The fortress was destroyed in 1659 by a siege of Swedish troops.
The citizens afterwards demolished the fortress. Today there are only some remains left.

The logo is a slight simplification of the former city arms as follows: shield Argent parted by a bar embattled Gules, above a wall of the same with five towers, each one topped by a ball and a crosslet patty, on base a bar wavy Azure.
Meaning:
The logo is based on the former city arms, which displayed basically the same arrangement. Only the embattled wall and the wall with towers had been masoned black and the whole base had been blue and was connected with the embattled wall
. Those arms are based on a city seal from 1648.
