The shield is divided per pale. The shield is cotized black and white. The silver (=white) dexter side is divided by a black cross. The red sinister side contains nine silver(=white) balls ordered vertically 5:4. The 1976 version was the same but had only eight balls ordered 5:3.

According to source the cross is symbolizing the archbishopric and electorate of Köln, to which the region belonged. The balls are symbolizing the municipalities forming the city. Probably in 1991 one new municipality was added.

It is a white flag with red edges at the top and bottom (i.e. a red over white over red horizontal triband). The coat of arms is in the centre of the white stripe.

In a silver (=white) shield is the upper half of St.Pancrass, dressed in blue coat, crowned by a green wreath of laurel and nimbed golden, holding a downward facing silver (white) sword with a golden (=yellow) hilt in his right hand.
Meaning:
According to source, the image is known from the main seal of the 14th century and existing prints since 1401, after Belecke had gained city rights in 1296. These arms had been granted by the Prussian king in 1912, the image coloured arbitrarily and the shield having been topped by a mural crown.
