On 1 July 1871, the people of Toms River organised the Toms River Yacht Club.
A few weeks later, the Toms River Challenge Cup was sailed for the first time.
Tiffany & Co. of New York created a silver trophy as the first prize, and its
the ownership of this trophy that has been fought over for 150 years since then.
The theoretical ownership that is, as the club ruled that the cup always has to
remain on club property.
The burgee during those times
was "a pointed burgee with a white ground, a three-inch blue border, and TRYC
written in red." This does make me wonder what standard size burgees had at that
time, that makes the designers think in an absolute size like "three-inch".
During its early decades, organizing regattas and challenge matches were the
main of the club's activities. From the end of the 19th century, things began to
change, though.
22 August 1903, the club decided on a new burgee: "A blue T on a
triangular white field."
In 1914, the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association
was formed and the club joined it in 1922.
The club has by now reached
the 150 years of existence and remains an active club, with several
non-flag-related events related in its history.
