The Grand Lake Yacht Club, was founded in 1902, probably in Denver. The story
has the feel about it of a group of four friends sitting at diner and daring
each other with improbable tales. So, they created "the highest yacht club in
the world", with Grand Lake as its home water. Yet, having declared its
existence, at least some of them would have to go up there to Grand Lake to
actually race. Well, race: we're talking about two canoes with improvised sails
on them.
In later years, since they now had a club for sailing on the
lake, actual sail boats were transported to the site. If it was a club, with
actual boats, it ought to have a club building. By 1912, the imagination had
given way to an actual yacht club.
Since then, this has been a perfect
summertime club, attracting people for the summer season from far and wide. Even
has its own website:
https://www.grandlakeyachtclub.com. But is it actually the highest yacht
club in the world? Probably not, but why ruin a good story?
