The Grand Army of the Republic

The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was an organization of veterans of the US Union Army, Navy, and the Marines who served in the American Civil War. It was founded in 1866 in Decatur, Illinois, and grew to include hundreds of "posts" (local community units) across the North and West. It was dissolved in 1956 at the death of its last member.

The "Grand Army of the Republic" or "G.A.R" were Union veterans who served in the U.S. military during the U.S. Civil War (1861-1865), and they held many reunions after the Civil War. To continue the G.A.R legacy, their sons later developed the "Sons of Veterans of the Civil War" or "S.U.V." {"Sons Union Veterans"), and conduct Civil War battle re-enactments and reunions.
