BERLIN TOWNSHIP – A swan now will keep watch over Berlin Township thanks to a
local youth who swapped his gaming controller for a sketch pad. North Elementary
School incoming fifth-grader Sawyer Schaffer, 10, who’s taken an interest in art
since school buildings were closed in light of the coronavirus pandemic, put his
skills to the test by penning a design for the township’s flag in a contest open
to four area schools.
Sawyer’s design, which depicts a swan swimming in
Lake Erie, was selected among 10 entries by members of the Berlin Township board
in early June and recently was revealed to the community.
