Kittery rolls out flag at party today
By Larry Favinger, Portsmouth Herald Staff Writer
KITTERY - The town flag will be unveiled for the first time tonight at the block-party opening of the shipyard's bicentennial celebration. Town Manager Philip O. McCarthy said one of the flags will be presented to Capt. Vernon T.
Williams, the shipyard commander, as part of the 4 p.m. opening ceremonies in the Foreside area. The town has never had a flag, McCarthy said, and the committee working on the party thought it would be a good idea to have one designed. The Traip Academy art class was contacted, and the students came up with several designs. The town council selected the flag and several have since been made. McCarthy said the flag is blue and gold, similar to Traip's colors, with the town logo on it. After the presentation to Capt. Williams, the remaining flags will be raffled off to help cover the cost of the party. "It's coming together very nicely," McCarthy said of the block party, which will kick off the festivities. "I'm looking forward to a good turnout. It is a family-type event."
Included in the opening ceremony will be U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine; Maine state Senate President Mark Lawrence; Capt. Williams; town council Chairman Mark J. Sousa; and McCarthy. Guests at the party, which is scheduled to go until 11
p.m., will include the Blue and Gold crews of the USS Maine, which is visiting the yard as part of the celebration. It is open for tours Saturday and Sunday. The shipyard will be open to visitors from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Town pride will wave in the wind as officials read a proclamation for the shipyard and dedicate a new town flag designed by Traip Academy sophomore Mike Navarro.
