It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field quartered of white and blue.

Shield Gules; a Marian crown Or gemmed Azure, flanked in chief by a goshawk Or lined Sable, holding an inescutcheon Azure, charged with five plates in quincunx, in his claws; and in base by a millstone and a millwheel, both Argent and ordered per fess. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black capitals "RIBEIRA GRANDE - CONCEIÇÃO".
Meaning:
The crown is an attribute of Our Lady of Conception, the local patron saint. Goshawk, and quina, are local symbols of the Azores.
