It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain yellow field.

Shield Sable, a pale wavy Argent charged with a pallet wavy Azure, flanked by a lion rampant double queued Or, holding a crozier Argent in pale by his forepaws, at dexter, and a bundle of three wheat ears and two corn cobs Or, leafed Argent. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black capitals "VÁRZEA - BARCELOS".
Meaning:
The pale wavy is a representation of the Côvo River. Lion and crozier are a representation of the local Benedictine monastery. The crops are symbolising agriculture.

Várzea is one of the 43 communes of Barcelos Municipality not affected by the 2013 changes; it had 1904 inhabitants in 2011 and covers 3,0 km².
