Located in Taito City Tokyo and established in 1949. There is no flag but an emblem was adopted. The emblem is a patterned outline of an acanthus leaf with the two kanji characters "芸大" (University of the Arts) within it. Acanthus, a perennial herb native to southern Europe, is a familiar motif widely used in architecture and crafts, including Greek column heads, where its graceful curves and complex and varied outlines are found to be interesting. The language of flowers is "art" and "skill. After 1949, when the Faculty of Fine Arts and the Faculty of Music were merged to form the University of the Arts, a competition was held within the school to determine a new emblem, and in 1950, the design created by Mr. Hiroshi Shimizu of the Department of Metal Casting, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Crafts was selected from among five candidates. The university color is lapis lazuli, an international color that was introduced from Persia via the Silk Road through China and Korea.
