INBAR started as an organization in 1995 from the original Canadian "International Network for Bamboo and Rattan" created in 1993 (logo: int-inbar(1993.gif). From 1997, its head office is in Beijing (China), with regional offices in South Asia (New Delhi, India), Central Africa (Yaoundé, Cameroon), East Africa (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia), West Africa (Kumasi, Ghana) and Latin America and the Caribbean (Quito, Ecuador).
It currently has 47 member countries since Fiji's accession in September 2020; the organisation is also an Observer member of the UNO since 2017. "The mission of INBAR is to improve the well-being of producers and users of bamboo and rattan within the context of a sustainable bamboo and rattan resource base by consolidating, coordinating and supporting strategic and adaptive research and development."
