The Town of Donji Miholjac (10,265 inhabitants according to the 2001 census, 6,680 in the town of Donji Mihiljac proper) is located about 35 km north-west of Osijek. The town is located more or less at the point where river Drava leaves the Croatian-Hungarian border and continues through the Croatian hinterland.
Donji Miholjac was granted the Town status in 1997.
Željko Heimer, 27 October 2003
The symbols of Donji Miholjac are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Grada Donjeg Miholjca, adopted in 1997 by the Town Council and published in the Town official gazette Službeni glasnik Grada Donjeg Miholjca, No. 5. This might be a simple updating of a previous Decision, required when Donji Miholjac was granted the Town status.
The Decision was amended by Decision Odluka o izmjenama Odluke o grbu i zastavi Grada Donjeg Miholjca, adopted by the Town Council on 30 October 2001 and published on 12 November 2001 in Službeni glasnik Grada Donjeg Miholjca, No. 10.
The symbols are described in the Town Statutes Statut Grada Donjeg Miholjca, adopted by the Town Council on 15 June 1998 and published on 19 June 1998 in Službeni glasnik Grada Donjeg Miholjca, No. 3. These Statutes replaced the temporary Town Statutes adopted in 1997 .
The current Town Statutes Statut Grada Donjeg Miholjca, adopted by the Town Council on 16 July 2009 and published on 17 July 2009 in Službeni glasnik Grada Donjeg Miholjca, No. 3, repeat word for word the description of the symbols.
The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka.
The flag is described in the Town Statutes as in proportions 1:2, white with the coat of arms, bordered yellow, in the middle. The flag is also hoisted vertically.

Coat of arms of Donji Miholjac - Image by Željko Heimer, 30 May 2013
The coat of arms is described in the Town Statutes as "Azure St. Michael holding a shield in his left arm and a sword in his right arm piercing the dragon", and claimed to be an historical coat of arms.
Laszowski (Grbovi Jugoslavije [lsv39]) blazons the coat of arms of Donji Miholjac as "Azure St. Michael Archangel piercing the dragon with a sword, holding in his left arm a shield inscribed 'Quis ut Deus'". He notes that the design is based on the marketplace's coat of arms of 1906, which he colorized himself. The drawing he provides is basically similar to the modern design, although of somewhat different artwork; the most notable difference is the oval shield in the Archangel's left hand, being golden with the black inscription "QUIS UT DEUS" on three lines. A shield with such an inscription is often seen in ecclesiastic art in representations of St. Michael Archangel; the Latin sentence means "Who is like God", this being the literal translation of the Hebrew name Michael.
In the design presented by Mladen StojiŽ#x0107; (Heraldic Art), at the 1st European Conference On Heraldry and Vexillology (Cieszyn, Poland, 2012), the saint's tunic has straight bottom edge and wraps tightly around his legs, looking very much like he is wearing modern running shorts. The armour plate extends down from the waist, curling in his front pelvic area. This design is used on official flags and
A second design, otherwise the same in nearly all details, has the
tunic with the lower end cut into few inch wide tails ending triangularly,
with some nine tails visible. The cuts go up all the way to the
armour plate that ends horizontally below the waist. There is also a
black line running horizontally few inches under the armour plate.
Such design is shown in the official gazette headers (example).
Yet another design is clearly visible in the ceremonial flag. Again, all other details are almost identical. The armour plate is cuving in the front, but the tunic is here forming triangularly ending
tails, but wider than in the previous version, with seven
tails visible, and the vertical cuts are reaching about the half of
the height of the part of the tunic visible under the armour. An almost identical coat ofarms is hangning at a wall (photo), only differing by the vertical cuts of the tails, which end in circular indentations.

The ceremonial flag (photo, photo, photo) is a white triangularly ending gonfalon with the coat of arms in the middle, the name of the town in green in two arches above and two green oak branches with golden acorns.
