On January 1, 2017, the former communes of Saint-Bon-Tarentaise and La
Perrière (Savoie) merged to form the new municipality of Courchevel
(2,311 inhabitants in 2021; 6,890 ha - website), named after the ski resort located
since WWII in Saint-Bon-Tarentaise.
Courchevel (website) is a winter sports resort in the Tarentaise valley located in the commune of Courchevel (until 2016, the commune of Saint-Bon-Tarentaise). First French resort created on a virgin site in 1946, it is the most eastern resort of the Three Valleys, the biggest connected ski area in the world. The resort is organized around five villages: Saint-Bon-Tarentaise (municipal capital), Courchevel Le Praz (called Courchevel 1300 before 2011), Courchevel Village (formerly Courchevel 1550), Courchevel Moriond (formerly Courchevel 1650) and finally Courchevel (formerly Courchevel 1850). The latter, which gives its name to the resort, is the first development nucleus where the work of the urban architect Laurent Chappis and the engineer Maurice Michaud was applied. This new urbanization of the mountain was included in the additional inventory of historical monuments in 1998, and around thirty sites are protected as historical monuments. Courchevel has 11 luxury hotels with a 5-star ranking. In 2011 France introduced a 6th star ranking for hotels, named "palaces". Eight hotels in France have received this rating, of which two are in Courchevel. The resort has seven restaurants with Michelin stars, of which four have two stars. It also hosts a variety of luxury shops. The majority of Courchevel's visitors are Gulf Arabs and Russian all of whom are considered luxury clientele.
The 2023 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships took place in Courchevel and Méribel.

Many international flags can be spotted in Courchevel because of its international luxury clientele. Since March 2022, because of the war in Ukraine, the flag of Russia in Courchevel has been replaced by a white flag with a peace dove outlined in blue (source: abc.net.au).
