The flag of the fictional Republic of San Marcos is a lone
white star on a black vertical band on the hoist side (like Texas)
and a white-yellow-white horizontal tricolor
from this black band to the fly.

The white star is upside down. The flag appears several times in one of the last scenes, as a group of revolutionaries in the small central-american banana-republic of San Marcos takes over the power and shoots (nicely, and with the help of Allen's character) the previous power-holders. The star is not upright. I'm positive of this, at least where one scene is concerned, and I suppose in other scenes the same thing happened, since it seemed to me that those were not really flags but painted bits of cardboard, or something like that … the "flags" were not flying, but were displayed as if attached to a sort of palisade in the firing field.

I've just been watching the film, and noticed that the central stripe of the flag is
not bright yellow, but a dull, pale orange-yellow (sort of caramel colour).
