Presentation of Las Ventas de Retamosa

The municipality of Las Ventas de Retamosa (3,268 inhabitants in 2018; 1,900 ha; municipal website) is located 40 km north of Toledo and 40 km west of Illescas.

Las Ventas de Retamosa was originally known as Las Ventas de Cabeza de Retamosa, as reported in Philllip II's Relaciones (1576). The village was established on a hill called Cabeza (lit., Head) de Retamosa (from retamo, "broom") around an inn (venta) managed by the majordomo of the lord of Casarrubios del Monte.
The village was established by Antón Pérez and Francisco de Magadán Fernánde, both from the town of Magán, on the Royal road from Madrid to Portugal. Mentioned in 1542 as a village with a council, Las Ventas de Retamosa depended on Casarrubios del Monte, unti granted the status of villa by Philip V in 1743.
