The municipality of La Mata (853 inhabitants in 2018; 1,920 ha; municipal website) is located 50 km west of Toledo and 20 km south-west of Torrijos. La Mata was granted the status of villa in 1651 by Philip IV, separating from Santa Olalla.
La Mata was first documented in 1205 when the village was granted to Martín, Master of the Order of Calatrava.
La Mata claims to be the birth place of Father Juan de Mariana (1536-1624), a famous humanist author of the Historia General de España; usually believed to be born in Talavera de la Reina.
