The Flag

The flag of Principal is horizontally divided yellow-green with a blue triangle placed along the hoist and a red star at the intersection of the three fields.

Blue represents the water resources of the parish (rivers and brooks) and the clear and beautiful sky that covers it.
Yellow represents handicrafts made by skillful women.
Green represents the profuse and extensive vegetation of the pramo [the alpine tundra ecosystem specific to northern Andes], the apple orchards and the abundant crop production, source of income for the households.
The red star represents the blood irrigating the veins of each inhabitant, the same that was shed by the hero Olivo Rivera during the Cenepa War.

Olivo Rivera (1974-1995), born in Principal, served in the Gualaquiza Forest Battalion (No. 63); he was killed on 27 January 1995 by a grenade during the attack by Peruvian soldiers. The Cenepa War, fought from 26 January to 28 February 1995, was the last episode of a persistent territorial dispute between Ecuador and Peru. "The definitive resolution of the border disputes between the two nations" was eventually proclaimed on 26 October 1998 in Brasilia.
