The club was established in 1884 as Segel Club "Greif" (English: griffin) and was renamed to Mecklenburgischer Yacht-Club in 1900, upgraded to Großherzoglich-Mecklenburgischer Yacht-Club in 1911. There remain a few oddities.
First contradiction: Flaggenbuch 1905 in part IV, p.3, row 5 column 3 denoted the yellow pennant with black griffin still as that one of "Greif". It displays also the ensign of Großherzoglich-Mecklenburgischer Yacht-Club (GHMYC), which was however inserted not before 1911.
Second Contradiction: In 1927 a n almanac was published: "Grossherzoglich Mecklenburgischer Yacht-Club". The pennant is again simply yellow with black griffin (see: here).
Under NS-rule in 1937 the name Großherzoglich-Mecklenburgischer Yacht-Club was forbidden. The club was downgraded to the Mecklenburg Branch of Yachtclub von Deutschland (YvD). In 1939 the club had to overtake the former Rostocker Yachtclub. In 1948 the club was incorporated into BSG Neptun. In 1950 a sailing department was established within the frame of SV Einheit. Around 1990 the club was re-established again as Mecklenburgischer Yachtclub Rostock.

Yellow pennant with a black griffin. The griffin is the Heraldic Beast of Rostock.
Very similar to the Rostock Pennant pre-1870 to 1918.
