Meaning:
The county is named after the famous Wartburg Castle, which is well-known because Martin Luther was hidden there from persecution in 1521.The arms combine elements from the arms of the territories to which the county historically belonged: the lion of the Margraves of Thüringen in the first quarter, there differentiated, and in the fourth quarter, in the second quarter the canting arms, hen on mountain, of the Counts of Henneberg, and in the third quarter the black cross of the Imperial Abbey and later Bishopric of Fulda.
