Shield parted per pale; at dexter barry of ten of Sable and Or a crancelin Vert; at sinister Azure a lion rampant barry of eight of Gules and Argent, crowned and armed Or; chevron embowed Gules issuant from base and charged with a wheel Argent,
Meaning:
The colours are derived from the arms. The arms show the arms of the three former territories to which most of the district belonged: Saxony (upper left), Thuringia (lion) and Mainz (wheel).
