Description of flag:
It is a black over white horizontal bicolour. The coat of arms is in the centre of the flag.

Description of coat of arms:
The silver (= white) shield is divided by a blue barrulet wavy. Above is a black eagle, armed and tongued red. Below is a red gate lodge, masoned black with an ajar, black lattice door. The lodge is flanked by two red 6-point stars.
Meaning:
The barrulet is symbolizing is symbolizing the many canals in the municipality. The eagle is taken from the arms of the mother of chieftain Focko Ukena. The lodge had been the Eastern gate of the fortified church of Remels. The stars are alluding to the Council of Uplengen, which took place in 1520.

Flag and coat of arms were never approved officially but adopted by the local council on 10 October 1974. The draft of both was designed by Ebo Pannenborg, a local heraldrist.
