A barrulet of salt crystals Argent divides both parts of the shield; above Azure a demi-lion issuant barry of five of Gules and Argent; beneath Sable a fountain Argent.
Meaning:
The fountain is symbolising the resort and spa in the city, which were founded in 1846. The bar of salt crystals is symbolising the salt mining near the city since the 14th century. The area became part of Hesse in 1736 as a heritage of the Counts of Hanau-Lichtenberg, which is symbolised by the lion. Until 1856 the local seal only showed the lion barry of Hesse. Elector Friedrich Wilhelm in 1854 granted the title of a city and in 1856 arms with the fountain in the upper half and the lion in the lower half.
The current arms were approved in 1913 by Grand-Duke Ernst-Ludwig.
