Beauce is a cultural and historical region located in Quebec, south of
Quebec City.
The first record of the name goes back to 1739. "Nouvelle
Beauce" (New Beauce) designated the seigneuries granted earlier along the
Chaudière River and which would later become the current cities of
Sainte-Marie, Saint-Joseph-de-Beauce, Beauceville, and Saint-Georges
According to accounts from Governor Charles de Beauharnois de la Boische and
Intendant Gilles Hocquart, the name "Beauce" was chosen by seigneurs Joseph de
Fleury de La Gorgendière, Pierre de Rigaud de Vaudreuil and Thomas-Jacques
Taschereau to develop the potential of colonization, as the name recalls the
French Beauce, a region renowned for its wheat production.
Historically,
Beaucerons have also been known under the nickname of "Jarrets noirs" (black
hocks). Travelling to Quebec City took up to one week, and because of the
hilly roads and their conditions, they would often have to push their farm
carts. They would get their legs dirty and arrive at the destination with
their hocks black.
The provincial and federal deputies of the region,
as well as representatives of the three regional county municipalities (MRCs)
of the territory (Beauce-Sartigan, Robert-Cliche and La Nouvelle-Beauce), were
at Destination Beauce (tourist information bureau) on 2019 August 15, to
present the colors of the very first flag of Beauce.
The flag is made of
two horizontal stripes, green (13/54) and blue (31/54), wih a central emblem
(a white maple leaf with its ribs forming rivers) and the name Beauce written
below. The flag has been designed by Pierre Poulin and his team from the
Agence TEAM, located in the municipality of Scott. The white emblem highlights
in particular the Chaudière River, the winding valleys, the maple leaf and the
Appalachians. According to the designer, “these colors are found on the flags
of each RCM, in addition to representing nature, the human side, water and the
mountain range. The central, white logo is intended to be a nod to the future
signs of the Beauce Tourist Route which will extend from Saint-Gédéon and
Saint-Lambert-de-Lauzon."
