Here is the official flag of the Town of Petty Harbour-Maddox Cove,
Newfoundland and Labrador:
http://www.pettyharbourmaddoxcove.ca/default.php?display=cid7&mid=39.
"The light blue diagonal on the lower portion of the flag represents the water
of the Atlantic Ocean upon which the community was founded. The white diagonal
above the light blue symbolizes both the icebergs which can be seen floating
past the community each spring and early summer as well as the purity of our
air. The compass has multiple meanings. Its blue color simulates the traditional
"Petty Harbour Blue" paint favored by the Town's fishermen for their boats while
the compass itself is a well-known fixture of the fishing industry. It can point
either to the future or the past and shows that the people of Petty Harbour -
Maddox Cove can take charge of their own destiny, choosing the direction in
which they want to move. Finally, just as the image of the codfish is central to
the flag so too is it central to the history, culture and economy of the
community. It is a lively fish, demonstrating strength and agility in the flick
of its tail. In the same way, the fishery continues to survive and thrive in
Petty Harbour - Maddox Cove despite the challenges of the 1990s and the
groundfish moratorium. Overall, the flag says that this is a community whose
history is a vibrant thread of its present and future cultural and economic
fabric. Designed by resident Bernard Martin 1998."
