Description of the flag

The West Virginia State Police was founded in June 1919, making it the fourth oldest state police agency in the United States. The organization was originally called the West Virginia Department of Public Safety, but changed its name to the West Virginia State Police during the 1995 session of the state General Assembly. As an agency, it is responsible for enforcing the laws of the state, investigating crime, and protecting the governor and his family.
