The municipality of Ankaran / Ancarano (3,206 inhabitants in 2019; 800 ha; municipal website), formerly part of Koper / Capodistria, was established by Decision No. 2,209, issued on 9 June 2011 and published on 17 June 2011 in the Slovene official gazette, No. 47, pp. 6,350-6,354 (text).
The municipality is composed of the village of Ankaran and of the hamlets of Bonifika, Rožnik, Sveta Katarina, Valdoltra, Debeli rtič, and Sveti Jernej.
Ankaran is of disputed etymology. The local, popular etymology, refers to a Benedictine abbot named Ancarano. Another explanation claims that Ancarano is of Roman origin, this toponym being also found in Teramo (Abruzzi), Monte Romano (Rome), Norcia (Umbria), and Rivergaro (Piacenza). The Ancarano salterns and hills are listed on a map designed in in 1791 by Koper-based architect Benedetto Petronio. Here, Ancarano would come from the Latin word ancora, "an anchor", "a small harbor", referring to the local geography. In Teramo, far from the sea, Ancarano is allegedly named for the pre-Roman goddess Ankaria; this explanation appears quite spurious for Ankaran, even if archeological excavations have revealed a complex cultural, pre-Roman background.

The flag of Ankaran is quartered per saltire yellow-green-yellow-blue.
The coat of arms of Ankaran ("Quarterly per saltire or and argent an olive tree vert superimposed in base three waves azure") features the sea's waves, an olive tree and lighthouse rays. This represents the coexistence of the coastal, preserved environment, cultural heritage and the inhabitants.
The symbols (municipal website) were adopted after a call for proposals, which yielded 77 submissions. Out of them, three proposals were short-listed by an expert jury composed of Aleksander Hribovšek, Dušan Grobovšek and Katja Pišot Maljevac. The final, winning design was selected by the citizens of Ankaran.
The winner is Franko Barut, who also designed the coat of arms of Koper.
Barut says: "The sea was my first guide. I also introduced agriculture via the olive tree, and a symbolized lighthouse that enlightens the road with its rays".
