Coat of Arms

[Chamoim commune CoA (until 2013)] image by António Martins-Tuválkin andSérgio Horta, 7 May 2025

Shield Azure two flames of Or and Gules set fesswise, in chief an escallop Argent, issuant from the flanches and from base wavy Argent, charged with a barrulet wavy Azure, a humpbridge Argent masoned Sable. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case serifed letters "CHAMOIM".
Meaning:
Within the communal territory of Chamoim lies the settlement Sequeirós, which was the seat of a municipality extinct in the mid 19th., when it necessarily had the rank of town. Unlike in other such cases, the modern coat of arms of the emcompassing commune doesn´t have four visible towers in its mural crown.
Source: Ralf Hartemink´s webpage. The toponym chamoim seems cognate of "chama", a common noun meaning "flame". I strongly suspect that the actual etym is unrelated, folk etymology being what it is, so, if anything, these are punning charges, not canting. The escallop is likely for the local path of the St. James´ Way, which follows an ancient Roman highway. (Some communal arms in this area show include Roman milestones and other traffic signs.) It is also an attribute of St. James the Elder, the local patron saint.
