It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field quartered of green and white.

Meaning:
The crown represents King Dom Afonso III, who confirmed the charter given to the village of Chavães by its possessors, members of the Azevedo kin. The resin pines represent the pine forest of Chavães, a source of raw material for an important economic activity practiced in the parish: forest exploitation. The rabbit represents the hunting area of Chavães, where rabbit, partridge and hare abound.

Chavães is one of the nine communes of Tabuaço Municipality not affected by the 2013 changes ; it had 299 inhabitants in 2021 and covers 9,94 km².
