Meaning:
This toponym means literally New Town of-the Chestnut-Grove of-the-King and these arms are therefore partly canting. The base wavy is a representation of the local Balsemão River.

Vila Nova de Souto d´El-Rei was one of the 14 communes of Lamego Municipality not affected by the 2013 changes; it had 728 inhabitants in 2021 and covers 8,79 km².
