Shield Or a pine eradicated Vert flanked by two sloe branches Vert fruited Purpure, tied above base wavy Azure and Argent barruly wavy. Mural crown Argent with three
visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case serifed letters "VÁRZEA DE ABRUNHAIS". The old version (see right image above) shows the sloe branches and, especially, the pine in a very different way.
Meaning:
The branch of sloe (Portuguese: abrunho) is a canting element.

The commune has not yet adopted officially a coat of arms with the concomitant flag. But a proposal was established by the Comissão de Heráldica da Associação dos Arqueólogos Portugueses (CHAAP) back on 13 March 1995.

Várzea de Abrunhais was one of the 14 communes of Lamego Municipality not affected by the 2013 changes; it had 329 inhabitants in 2021 and covers 5,85 km².
