The coat of arms was adopted from 1989, as an initiative of the Council of 1989-1992 under Municipal President Alejandro Frausto Castillo. It was designed by Pedro Facio Vázquez, who was a primary school teacher, and adopted through a call for submissions from the council. The jury, including people from the city of Zacatecas, determined it would win over the design by Práxedis Hernández Mauricio. Above the shield is a crown, symbolizing royalty. Initials are also seen but their meaning is unclear. To the sides of the shield are cobs of corn, signifying agriculture. The border of the shield reads at the top VILLA GONZALEZ ORTEGA ZAC. To the sides, LA EDUCACION Y EL TRABAJO ES PROGRESO [Education and Work is Progress]. The left half depicts a cob of corn, old tower-like houses, a head of cattle for cattle-raising, and an open book for education. To the right, an image of the Church of Our Lord of Saint Therese found here.
