Coat of Arms

The coat of arms of Sombrerete was designed by Jorge Guillermo Sánchez Ruvalcaba, being adopted in 1955 as part of the celebrations for the 400th anniversary of the city. As he helped with preparing, he decided to design a coat of arms for the municipality himself. A coin was minted for the event, having on its reverse the coat of arms. The shield is bordered by branches filled with laurel leaves, and has more leaves at the bottom to the sides. The central design is in an oval form. In the center of the oval is the Sombreretillo Hill, which the Municipality is named after, on a pedestal. A cross is situated on it remembering the evangelization. The hill is pierced by a sword symbolizing the protection entrusted to the Knights of the Order of Saint James. Since the municipal seat is found in a ravine, the landscape under the hill is the same.
