According to https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escudo_de_Nogales_(Sonora), the coat of arms of Nogales was designed by Arnulfo Rodríguez Guerra and adopted in 1980. It was adopted after the city's centennial committee held a contest for the creation of a song, poem, and coat of arms to represent the city; the border, Nogales, Sonora, its centenary, and Mexico were bases for the contest. In the background, the coat of arms depicts an acorn which comes from an oak tree found all over the city and the colors of the Mexican flag. A Yaqui performing the deer dance is also found, in beige representing the warmth of the people of Sonora; above this, the arches of the international port of entry are depicted. For his design of the coat of arms, Arnulfo received 25,000 pesos and a certificate. The original design of the coat of arms had 1880 to the left of the acorn and 1980 to the right.
