The history of the coat of arms is unknown apparently, according to the municipal council. Information as located by Valentin Poposki (translated):

The coat of arms is of Swiss form and in the unique field, it has as a central motif a jade mask, likewise it is sustained by two Maya figures; these Maya figures on their knees appreciate the two adjacent mounds (pyramids in ruins) which give origin to the ecologic toponymy of the municipality. In the upper left part a tree is represented cut for the purposes of extraction of gum into bars of the product, evoking the principle of the human settlements and productivity of the time as a gum colony; in the upper dexter margin a honeycomb symbolizes apiculture, one of the most economic activities of the municipality, over the mask of Calakmul an ear of corn, a crop which during years has been the most important agriculture production of our region, like the legacy of our Maya culture which the Popol-Vuh says, sacred book which says that with a corn plant man was created.

Marked in the contour of the coat of arms in green coloring as a dignified representation of the tropical jungle, and in the upper part two serpents are appreciatedwhich remember our tribute to Kukulkán. In the lower central part, the figure of the Jaguar is appreciated, characteristic animal of the region of CALAKMUL and considered a sacred animal of the Mayas.

In the upper part, a band is located which cites "HISTÓRICO, ECÓLOGICO, LIBRE Y SOBERANO MUNICIPIO DE CALAKMUL", sustained with three golden rays which represent: The Past, The Present, and the Future of Calakmul.
