The city emblem was adopted on Mar 14th 1963 by Notice No 29 and the flag was adopted on Jun 5th 1973 by Notice No 137.
The purple flag has a white or gold city emblem in the center.
The city emblem is a stylized kanji 北九 KitaKyu.
The five flower petals symbolize an unification of the former five cities ,the center star does the industry and the radial arrangement does the city’s development.
The flag proportion is 2: 3.
The diameter of the emblem is 3/5 height of the flag

"小倉" (English: Kokura) was established as a city on April 1, 1900 and abolished on February 1, 1963. In 1974 it was divided into the Kokura Kita Ward and Kokura Minami Ward.
It is now part of Kitakyushu City, when it merged together with other four former Municipalities on February 10, 1963: Moji, Tobata, Yahata and Wakamatsu.
It constituted the Kokura ward of the new city until 1974, when it was divided into Kokura Kita Kokura Ward ward in the north, and Kokura Minami Ward in the south as well as Yahata being subdivided into Yahatanishi Ward and Yahatahigashi Ward.

Wakamatsu was established as a city on April 15, 1918 and abolished on February 10, 1963. It is now part of Kitakyushu City, when it merged together with other four former Municipalities on February 10, 1963: Moji, Tobata Yahata and Kokura. It constituted the Wakamatsu Ward of the new city until April 1, 1974, when Part of Oaza Koshiki in Wakamatsu Ward and all of Asakawa, along with the western half of Yahata Ward, were transferred to Yahata Nishi Ward and the eastern half of Yahata Ward was transferred to Yahata-Higashi Ward.

"門司" (English: Moji) was established as a "市" (English: City) on April 5, 1921 and abolished on February 10, 1963.
It is now part of Kitakyushu City, when it merged together with other four former Municipalities on February 10, 1963: Tobata, Yahata, Wakamatsu and Kokura. It constitutes the Moji Ward.

"八幡" (English: Yahata, also translated as Yawata) was established as a "市" (English: City) on February 10, 1900 and abolished on February 10, 1963. It is now part of Kitakyushu City, when it merged together with other four former Municipalities on February 10, 1963: Moji, Tobata, Wakamatsu and Kokura. It constituted the Yahata Ward of the new city until 1974, when it was divided into Yahatanishi Ward and Yahatahigashi Ward.

"戸畑" (English: Tobata) was established as a "市" (English: City) on September 1, 1924 and abolished on February 10, 1963. It is now part of Kitakyushu City, when it merged together with other four former Municipalities on February 10, 1963: Moji, Yahata, Wakamatsu and Kokura. It constitutes the Tobata Ward.
